This podcast differentiates itself from the thousands of identical football shows out there by presenting a completely different perspective (that of the historian) on stories that we're all generally familiar with, but also by introducing the audience to periods of football's history which have often been forgotten or misinterpreted by the popular recollection. This results in a show which is a refreshing break from the narrative cycles which are predictably turned over and over in all corners of traditional media and on the internet by the same voices. It's always an engaging listen thanks to the experience and knowledge of the hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper, as well as the cast of engaging guests, who often offer a different view than you hear on other competing podcasts, for instance that of a journalist connected to the world of horse racing, such as David Walsh in a recent episode. Thereby a unique and interesting take on football shines through: one which is able to analyse the broader trends which surround and define the changes the game has witnessed, but also the principal individuals who have shaped the course of these developments.

Really enjoying this pod. Jonathan Wilson is always interesting and insightful when I’ve listened to him on Second Captains, Guardian Football Weekly & The Greatest Game so this has been great to hear him go into such depth. Haven’t listened to much of Rob’s content before but he is also great here.
