208: Ramesses II The Oracle & The Sphinx

A death at Karnak, and a lion amongst men. In regnal year 1 (c.1292 BCE), Ramesses II was at Abdju / Abydos. While there, he appointed a new First Priest of Amun (Hem Netjer Tepy en Imen). He chose his candidate by consulting the deity directly, engaging in an oracle with Amun to choose the best option. Shortly after, Ramesses departed Abdju and continued his northward journey. 208: Ramesses II The Oracle and the Sphinx

While he was in Abdju (c.1292 BCE), Ramesses had to make a choice. The First Priest of Amun had died, and needed a successor. To resolve this issue, the King asked Amun directly. A divine oracle was held to choose a new priest. We hear about this from the man Ramesses appointed. Continuing north, Ramesses visited Giza. 207: Ramesses II Shadow of Two Fathers

Ramesses had a lot to plan for, in his first year of rule (c.1292 BCE). Staying in Waset / Luxor, the new pharaoh began building work on his tomb (KV7) and his memorial temple (The Ramesseum). Archaeological records testify to both of these projects. Then, the King immortalised his late father, the Osiris Sety I, in scenes of worship at Karnak. Finally, Ramesses left Waset, heading north; but he stopped at Abdju / Abydos on his way. There to commune with Osiris (Sety) once more, and to address some glaring issues... 207: Ramesses II The Shadow of Two Fathers (Extended Edition)

The year was 1292 BCE, approximately. August, the second month of Akhet (the flood season). Regnal year 1 under the King of Southern and Northern Egypt, Wasmuriya Riamessesa, known today as User-Ma’at-Ra Ramesses II. The king was 20 years old, give or take, and had just completed the burial rites of his father, the Osiris Menmaatra Sety I. The transition had been smooth. Ramesses had been Sety’s chosen heir for several years already; and when the old king died, the new one stepped into power with minimal disruption. But the shadow of Sety I would loom large over Ramesses’ early rule. The young Horus put a lot of effort (and resources) into completing his father’s work; and Ramesses’ contributions to that work are remarkably personal, giving us a sense of the relationship between him and his father. As we embark upon this legendary reign, we must understand where Ramesses began.
