In Evangelical homes across the United States, sex outside of marriage is a sin against God. So, when Abbi becomes pregnant at 16, her devout parents hide her away at the Liberty Godparent Home, a little-known facility for pregnant teens on the campus of Liberty University. The Home says it helps girls decide what comes next – whether that’s parenting their babies or placing them for adoption. But inside the facility, the girls hear a different message: God wants their babies to go to more “deserving” Christian couples. Some girls will find the strength to fight back. Others will have no choice but to give in. And some, like Abbi, will turn their grief into resistance – and take a stand against the system before more mothers lose their children to adoptions they never wanted. From Wondery, host and reporter T. J. Raphael tells a startling true story of young love, coercion, and defiance – and the dangerous resurgence of maternity homes in post-Roe America. A Timely & Much Needed Podcast!
hace 2 días
Wow—I just finished Liberty Lost and ended up subscribing to Wondery just so I could listen to the entire series. This was an absolutely incredible production. It’s so timely and deeply relevant. It’s heartbreaking to see that young people are still being caught up in this adoption crisis. I truly appreciate how thoroughly the topic was explored and the powerful, detailed accounts from some of those who experienced life in Godparents’ Homes. Honestly, Forever Scarred would have been a fitting title, too, as those who told their stories in this podcast remain as traumatized today as they were while in those Homes.
Extremely bias

As a parent you have a responsibility to do what’s best for your child. No job, no education, no father but you want to the tax paying dollars to pay for your child. You are upset that tax payer dollars are paying for pregnancy homes but think it’s ok for teenagers to receive money to raise their child like it is everyone’s else’s responsibility to raise their child. Also, you act like every home is awful. Do you know this for fact? Do you think every pregnancy resource center is bad too? Have you interviewed any mothers who entered homes and had good things to say? You act like every single female that went thru a home is tortured and forced to give up their baby. Are there any success stories? What makes you think women who give birth and cannot understand their rights and are so easily coerced as you said are smart enough or responsible enough to raise and care for a human life? Instead of constantly blaming these homes, oh and blaming religion let’s step back and look at the parents that forced their girls into them. Also, bringing up Roe is a mute point. It has nothing to do with this. Acting like overturning Roe is forcing every pregnant teen into a home is such misinformation. You all act like killing babies is a more justifiable business than adoption. Thats pretty dark. Plus, don’t even know anything about the overturning of Roe? You act like Roe made all abortions illegal. That too is misinformation that you are spewing. Is it an awful thing what happened to the 3 women you interviewed? Yes! Of course! However, 3 out of the thousands that has went thru maternity homes hardly seems like a crisis.
Very biased & little fact checking.

This is a biased story that discredits the stories of the many women who had positive experiences that voluntarily pursued making adoption plans, for a variety of reasons, and felt encouraged and empowered by the staff during that process. This discredits the stories of birth parents that have beautiful open communication with the adoptive families they chose to raise their children. This also creates a false narrative for adopted persons whose birth parent may have once been a resident and risks the possibility of impacting their identity in a negative way. I would encourage listeners to do their own research on this before believing all that was shared in this podcast.
