Zen Master Genpo Roshi | Zen practice meets Western psychotherapy, enlightenment, and psychedelic awakenings

Send us a text In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, we’re talking with Zen Master, Genpo Roshi. Roshi has been one of the pioneers of Zen throughout the U.S. and Europe. He’s known for his development of the Big Mind process, a method that combines Zen practice with Western psychological principles to facilitate personal transformation and insight. We discuss his early life experiences that set him on this path, the concepts of awakening and enlightenment, the nature of the mind, human being vs. doing, the judicious use of psychedelic tools, and the differences between Big Mind and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Roshi also takes Reid and me through a short practice that we found very helpful.  You can learn more about Roshi’s teachings at https://bigmind.org/ For those of you who are new to the show, welcome! Psychedelics and Internal Family Systems (IFS): A partnership in relational healing with Curt Kearney

Send us a text In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, we’re talking with psychotherapist, Curt Kearney, about his new book, “Psychedelics and Internal Family Systems (IFS): A partnership in relational healing.” IFS is a powerful therapy model that’s becoming very popular these days. When we talk about which psychotherapy models might pair well with psychedelic tools, IFS is usually somewhere near the top of the list. In his book and in this conversation, Curt draws from his extensive experience with psychedelics and as an IFS practitioner and trainer to walk us through how one might use IFS with psychedelic tools in a synergistic and relational way. What all effective therapies have in common (part 2)

Send us a text We’re back with part 2 of our 2-part series on what all effective psychotherapies have in common. Last week we introduced you to the common factors research on psychotherapy outcomes, using the work of Dr. Jeffery Smith, MD to help us structure the conversation. We discussed how entrenched maladaptive patterns, fueled by affective avoidance, contribute to mental health conditions and how all good psychotherapy models help people generate awareness around those patterns, make contact with their emotions, and take deliberate steps to change those patterns in durable ways. In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, we continue the conversation by diving a little deeper into memory reconsolidation, exposure-based therapies, the corrective emotional experience, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and other topics.
